Nilaari director named ‘happiness champion’

Jean Smith NilaariNilaari's director has been named a 'happiness champion' by the Happy City initiative for making Bristol a happier place to be. Jean Smith MBE and 24 others were included in the annual list to mark their good work in the city.

Mike Zeidler, chief optimist at Happy City, says: "Jean is really dedicated and definitely a good happiness champion. There's no question about it!"

Jean has worked for Nilaari for over 17 years. The charity - which is one of Bristol Mental Health's partner organisations - offers a culturally-appropriate service for mental health, (re)offending behaviour and problematic substance abuse in Bristol's inner city.

"I was deeply touched and surprised to be nominated," says Jean.

This is the fourth time Happy City has released a list of happiness champions. The idea was inspired by the Independent on Sunday's Happy List, a run-down of people who should be applauded for creating happiness rather than being featured on a list for their wealth or fame.
