Faces of BMH: Richie Horton

Richie Horton

Job title: ACE Engagement Worker

1) What does your job involve?

My job involves engaging hard-to-reach, isolated people in the community. I build trust with people, assess them and refer them to either secondary mental health or community-based services for longer term care and support.

2) What do you enjoy best about your role?

Meeting new clients. The building of relationships is really important to me. Some of the clients I meet might not have come into contact with services for many years and have really deep seated issues of mistrust. To allow them time and space to open up and share with me is a real privilege.

3) Describe how you're feeling today in three words.

Hopeful, optimistic and inspired.

4) What do you do to keep mentally healthy?

My family are very important to me; spending time with them is great. I enjoy most sports, watching or playing, although not so much the playing anymore as I'm getting on a bit! Sleep is very important so I feel refreshed and ready for the day.

5) What do you like best about Bristol?

Bristol City FC.

6) What would you recommend that people try in the city?

A visit to the mighty Ashton Gate to watch a game.
