Community Rehabilitation Service makes first match in mentoring project

Community Rehabilitation Service logoThe Community Rehabilitation Service has paired its first volunteer with a service user as part of its new mentoring project, which will see volunteers supporting people with their recovery and wellbeing.

Volunteer Matt Grady is the first volunteer within the project to be matched with a client. Matt began his volunteer experience by helping at a supper club at Wellbridge House, supported accommodation for people with mental health problems, that's run by the service. He has now moved on to volunteering in the mentoring project.

"I started volunteering with Second Step as I needed something to focus on and I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life.

"…I'm mentoring now and I love it. I like getting out and listening to him [the client I support] and really feel like I'm doing something positive for someone. I find volunteering really rewarding."

Volunteers are matched with a client for around six months to support them to improve their mental health and wellbeing, which could involve encouraging them to engage with new activities, get involved in volunteering or feel confident contributing to their local community.

Chris Kinston, community rehabilitation service manager, says: "All our volunteers are completely different. They bring hope and their own experience which motivates clients to develop in a way that works for them. The service benefits so much from volunteer involvement. It's these relationships that really support people's rehabilitation."

Second Step is currently recruiting new volunteers for a range of roles. You can find out about volunteer opportunities with Second Step on the BMH 'Work or volunteer with us' page. For more information, please call Cheryl Hardy, Senior Volunteer Coordinator at Second Step, on 0785 5014 046.
